Jordan to meet Latvia on road to Women’s Asian Cup

Published on: 23 September 2017

Amman: Host nation Jordan are set to continue their 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup preparation, travelling to Riga this week for an international friendly against Latvia.

The match – to be held on Tuesday – continues a busy year for Michael Dickey’s side, which has included a successful participation in the Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, as well as friendlies in Bosnia and Croatia and a training camp in the United States.

Led by captain Stephanie Al Naber, Jordan aim to become the first West Asian nation to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which they will achieve if they finish in the top five in next year’s Asian showpiece.

Latvia currently sit 87th in FIFA’s World Rankings, and failed to qualify for this year’s UEFA European Championship, but the Didzis Matiss-coached side have enjoyed a good run of recent form.

They are unbeaten in five matches in 2017 and claimed the Women’s Baltic Cup in Lithuania, although they have already been eliminated from qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

The AFC Women’s Asian Cup Jordan 2018 final draw will be held in Amman on December 4, with the tournament to begin on April 6, 2018.
