Bangkok: Syria’s Omar Khrbin clinched the AFC Player of the Year award at the AFC Annual Awards 2017 in Bangkok on Wednesday but said his true desire is to bring happiness to his country.

Khrbin had been pivotal in Al Hilal’s performance in the AFC Champions League 2017, reaching the final, and Syria’s run in the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 Asian Qualifiers.

Despite the heartbreaks, he is already looking ahead.

“We hope that next year we will do our best and try to get the AFC Champions League title for Al Hilal,” said Khrbin.

The 23-year-old forward stated that his performance was the outcome of the support from home, his countrymen being the source of his drive to be better.

“We have determination to play football, but this determination becomes stronger when you have people who are hungry for happiness and joy.

“From now onwards, I would like to promise the Syrian people that we will do our best to bring that happiness and joy during the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Finals. Our people deserve to be happy.

“I will always insist on bringing happiness to the people. No matter how happy I am, I will not have satisfaction if I don’t see smiles and happiness on the faces of others.”
