Werder Bremen have confirmed that Florian Kohfeldt will remain as the club's head coach for the foreseeable future.

"Regardless of the outcome of our DFB Cup match against Freiburg, we've seen the desired improvement in the side and want to give Florian Kohfeldt the opportunity to continue his work," said Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann, who did not disclose the length of the coach's contract. "Our objective has to be to avoid relegation and to keep developing the team next season."

Last month it was announced the 35-year-old would be in charge until at least the winter break, having taken over following Alexander Nouri's dismissal as head coach on 30 October.

Although Bremen are currently 16th in the Bundesliga table, they have won three of their seven games under Kohfeldt, including impressive victories over Hannover and Borussia Dortmund.

Kohfeldt himself was delighted with the news: "Our team's got the potential to stay in the Bundesliga and we want to show that consistently in the second half of the season. We want to pick up a win against Freiburg in the DFB Cup to give us momentum for our preparations during the break. I'm very happy to be able to continue working with the players, my coaching staff and all the colleagues who help the team."
