Kotoko coach pats team for 'energy saving' performance

Asante Kotoko coach Mas-Ud Dramani says it was unfair to demand another cricket scoreline in their second leg win over Sony Nguema.

The Ghanaian champions put in an efficient display to grind out a 1-0 win in the return fixture of the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League in Malabo.

The win saw Kotoko progress in the competition with an impressive 8-0 aggregate win over the Equatorial Guinean side.

But some fans believe the side could have scored more than a goal in the second leg match following the 7-0 thrashing recorded in the first leg.

But coach Dramani says exerting too much energy to produce another cricket scoreline was not necessary with tougher games to come in the tournament.

“This is a competition that we did our best to kill it off in the first round (first leg) in Kumasi,” he said.

“We therefore were to go into the second leg cautiously to ensure that, first we did not concede a goal, and secondly to secure a win without over working ourselves.

“If you watch this match carefully, you will realize that was exactly what we did.”

Kotoko will now face Algerian side JSM Bejaia in the next preliminary round later this month.

The first leg will be played between the weekend of 15-17 March and return in Kumasi 5–7 April.
