Asante Kotoko risk losing points in the boardroom to further blow the title challenge wide open following alleged attacks on referee E.R Biney in the 1-0 defeat to Heart of Lions on Wednesday.

Referee Biney needed heavy police escort to escape the wrath of charged Kotoko fans to leave the Baba Yara Stadium.

The Kotoko fans claim they were robbed off a victory in their own backyard with an awarded penalty to Hearts of Lions which eventually won the game for the visitors.

There are even allegations of top Kotoko officials inciting the irate crowd to attack the referee after the game on Wednesday.

With the Ghana FA taking a simile ruthless stance on attacks on match officials following the death of young referee Kwame Kyei Andoh, the champions whose lead at the top of the Ghanaian top flight was cut to eight with the defeat risk losing more points on disciplinary grounds to blow the title challenge widely open.

“You cannot say that Kotoko has won the league. They could be sanctioned by way of deduction of points if they misbehave and that could bring their accumulated points build up down,” Ghana FA’s Premier League Board chairman Welbeck Abra-Appiah told GFA TV a fortnight ago.

“I am not saying that is what will happen but if it does then the Ghana FA and the PLB will not shy away from issuing the appropriate sanctions.”

The champions began their title defence this season with a ban away from their home grounds due to a similar situation last season.

The Ghana FA could however be tempted to dish out much harsher sanctions – including points deductions – to bite harder due to the recent attacks on match officials and the wider call for stiffer sanctions.

If this is done, Kotoko’s eight point lead at the top of the Ghana Premier League could be further reduced to give closest rivals Hearts of Oak an opportunity to draw closer with just eight matches left to go.
