Ex Asante Kotoko star Shilla Illiasu says the club can never make a meaningful impact in Africa unless they sign quality players to make the team competitive.

The Porcupine Warriors have struggled to cut it in the CAF Champions League despite their dominance in the Ghana Premier League for the past two seasons.

Kotoko again crashed out of the flagship African club competition at the preliminary stage to less-fancied Liberian club Barrack Young Controllers.

The team however looks set to return to the Champions League next season as they remain in pole position to clinch the Ghanaian top flight this term.

But their former player Shilla Illiasu says the club is bound to fail in Africa once more again until they invest in bringing in quality players to enhance the team’s competitiveness.

“It will be very difficult for Kotoko to excel in Africa in the current condition,” he told Metro FM.

“In our time, the team was highly competitive but I don’t see that in the current crop.

“I think the club needs to get quality players to make the team very competitive if they are to make an impact in Africa.”

Kotoko are currently 10-points clear at the top of the Ghanaian top flight but have played a couple of games more than their closest rivals as the competition draws to a close.
