Kotoko thump Wassaman to stay top

A brace each from Nathaniel Asamoah and Ahmed Toure helped Asante Kotoko condemn new boys Wassaman 4-1 on Sunday to stay top of the Ghana league.

The game in Kumasi got off to an impressive start as all the five goals of the thrilling encounter occurred before the interval.

Ivorian striker Toure scored on the 2nd and 5th minutes before Issah Saliu halved the deficit on 10 minutes.

Quick-silver attacker Asamoah was also twice on hand to help give Kotoko to a memorable victory.

Toure opened the scoring for the Porcupine Warriors under just two minutes but Wassaman tried to respond almost immediately.

Issah Saliu did some brilliant work in midfield before playing through Felix Adjei Frimpong whose first-time volley crashed the woodwork.

Moments later, Toure announced himself again as a top scorer with another creative finish.

Midfielder Daniel Nii Adjei made a deft turn and run clear of his marker before locating Toure who connected home from close range.

Issah Saliu halved the deficit for Wassaman to keep Kotoko's expectant fans at bay on ten minutes.

Asamoah restored Kotoko's two goal difference with a fine finish. He grabbed his brace with an incisive left-footed drive.

Toure had tried his luck for his first hat-trick of the season but Wassaman goalkeeper kept the goal out.

Asamoah arrived in time to pounce the ball home to send the home fans on cloud nine.

Fatau Mohammed could have made it five for Kotoko after receiving a through pass from Ohene Brenya.

Fatau slipped and missed from close range when scoring seemed the easier option.

Ahmed Toure's hat-trick was put on hold by the Wassaman goalkeeper when he dived to grab his goal-bound effort just moments before the interval.

The Porcupine Warriors tried to add to the tally after the break but the Tarkwa-based side held the on-fire Toure and Asamoah in close check.

The win keeps Kotoko on top but with Chelsea and Hearts breathing heavily down their neck.
