English top-flight side Leicester City have played down reports that they are on the verge of signing Ghana's Daniel Amartey from Danish giants FC Copenhagen.

The versatile youngster was reported to be courted by several clubs this summer with English side Leicester City and Olympique Marseille said to be very keen on landing him.

Reports in the Danish media had claimed a bidding war between the two sides over the past week with Leicester officials said to have even arrived to negotiate a purchase.

But Leicester City coach Claudio Ranieri has refuted the rumours that talks of the purchase of the Ghana international is underway.

“I don’t want to speak about speculation (Leicester City’s reported interest in Amartey), at this moment I prefer to speak about my players not the other players,” Ranieri said.

Leicester were reported to have had an initial £4.5m bid rejected are said to have upped their offer by a million pounds with Marseille hoping to close the deal for a fee around €6m.

Despite his denial, Copenhagen could be forced to sell should the club receive an attractive offer for the former Djurgården defender.

"Should there be one that is attractive enough, then we will evaluate what is best for FC Copenhagen and will announce this via the usual procedure," Anders Hørsholt added.

Amartey has been out on suspension after receiving a straight red card in Copenhagen's stalemate with Nordsjaelland on August 9.
