Liberty to compete in CECAFA Club Championship

Ghana Premier League side Liberty Professionals have been invited by the Confederation of Central African Football (Cecafa) to play in this year's Kagame Cup Club Championship.

Liberty will be joined by Egyptian giants Al Ahly for the competition which will be played from 21 June to 5 July in Sudan.

The Scientific Soccer Lads will know thier opponents for tournament when they draw is held on 1 May in Nairobi.

Cecafa's Secretary General Nicholas Musonye believes the inclusion of Al Ahly and Liberty Professionals will make tournament more competitive.

"We have talked to these two clubs and they are willing to be part of the competition," Musonye told Daily News.

The tournament which will jointly be played in Khartoum and Port Sudan has attracted a lucrative sponsorship package of US$ 800,000.

The sponsorship will cover air travel tickets for all participating teams, Cecafa officials and referees.

The money will also cover full board accommodation for all delegations and local transport amongst other logistic details.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has sponsored the event to the tune of US $60,000 as prize money while the sponsors have agreed to top up the incentive with US$ 40,000 to be shared among the top three teams.
