Lionel Messi wins 2014 World Cup Golden Ball

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has been awarded the 2014 World Cup Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.

He collected the trophy in the aftermath of his side's narrow defeat to Germany in the tournament's final, and understandably didn't look too consoled by his prize.

However, Messi edged out several outstanding nominees to win the award, including German World Cup winners Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller and Philipp Lahm.

Though he failed to really perform to his astonishing best in the final, he was unquestionably the shining light in the vast majority of Argentina's matches.

When the albiceleste were struggling to break down disciplined defences in the group stages, it was often their talismanic captain who came to their rescue with moments of individual brilliance, the most memorable moment being his stunning winning goal against Iran.

Hopefully the trophy will go some way to cheering up sad Leo after the devastation of the final has worn off.

What about James Rodrigues of Colombia who inspite of playing only five games won the golden boot with six goals. FIFA should have awarded him the best player award as well instead of Messi who was so inconsistent in this World Cup.

I think Manuel Neuer should have won both the Golden ball and golden gloves

Thomas muller should have been the best player in this WC! There is no player like him and he has been the BEST TEAM PLAYER in thus era! What a talent and he doesn't play for attention for the good of his team and his awkward running style makes him less noticeable but his contributions are A RATED! He is obviously one of the underrated players of this era but posterity ll judge him fairly! If only Ghanaian players ll learn from this AWESOME TALENT, WE CAN TAKE THE WORLD BY STORM! With the exception of zidane, I have never seen a player like him!

Robin of Holland deserves this award more than Messi. Messi didn't play shit. He pretented he didn't want the award when it was presented to him. It's sad when some people want to compare Messi to the great Maradona. Apoooo. Mtweeewww.....

Messi receiving the best player award is like Akwasi Appiah being awarded 2 years contract. Men and corruption. Base on what was this award given to him? he did not play shit. No wonder Kwesi Nyantekye is copying blatter and his partner in crime platini.
