Liverpool are still seeking to sign Ghana defender John Boye despite reaching a deal to sign Ivorian centre-back Kolo Toure, insiders have told GHANAsoccernet.com.

The English giants swooped for the signature of Toure as the Reds seek to shore up their defence with the retirement tough defender Jamie Carragher.

But with the vowel deficient Martin Skrtel out of favour under Brendan Rodgers, there is still a vacancy in central defence at Anfield.

Insiders say agents of Rennes reliable centre-back Boye have been talking over the past few days about the possibility of reaching a deal this summer.

Boye has been the most impressive player for Rennes this season which has resulted in the talk of offers coming from some top clubs in Europe.

The 26 year-old's strengths lie in his anticipation and positioning, and to illustrate that, he averages 3.2 interceptions per game in Ligue 1.

He is also a great presence aerially and a hard but fair tackler, and would be expected to adapt quickly to the more physical Premier League.

His weakness is that he is not the most technically adept player, and tends to clear the ball long rather than begin attacks with short passing out the back.

Reds may have to move quickly if they are to lure the 26 year-old to Merseyside.
