English-born Ghanaian attacker Lloyd Sam is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering groin and ankle injuries while in action for New York Red Bulls in the US Open Cup on Tuesday.

Sam, 30, picked the groin injury and hurt his left ankle while in action for the Bulls in their 3-0 win over Atlanta Silverbacks.

Sam had opened the scoring in the 7th minute for Bulls but was forced off the Red Bulls Arena pitch after suffering the double injury.

The former Charlton Athletic star was axed from the Bulls line-up on Saturday night due to the injury and the impact was telling as they slipped to a 2-1 home reverse against Gershon Koffie's Vancounver Whitecaps.

This season, Sam has started in 12 of New York’s 13 games. He has scored four goals and added three assists.

"We would hate to lose him because he’s very important to our offense, but look at Dane today,” said New York goalkeeper Luis Robles on Tuesday after the 3-0 win over the Silverbacks. "He had some chances, he was threatening, and now we just need him to find the back of the net."
