Everton have not kept a clean sheet since Ronald Koeman was sacked

Caretaker boss David Unsworth has had a "positive" impact on the Everton team despite a "disappointing and upsetting" Europa League defeat by Atalanta, according to captain Wayne Rooney.

Thursday's loss at Goodison Park means Everton have been beaten in four of their six games under Unsworth.

The Toffees have had an approach for Watford boss Marco Silva rejected.

"The board have a decision to make and I'm sure they're working on it," said Rooney.

"Since David Unsworth has come in there's been a great atmosphere among the players and some positive results."

Everton have conceded 16 goals since Ronald Koeman was sacked on 23 October following a 5-2 home defeat to Arsenal.

The have won just one of the six matches since the Dutchman's exit - a 3-2 Premier League victory over Silva's Watford.

Two goals apiece from Bryan Cristante and Andreas Cornelius, and one from Robin Gosens condemned them to defeat by Atalanta.

The Toffees had already been eliminated before the game, but Unsworth selected a strong side.

Rooney added: "There was nothing riding on the game, but it's our pride.

"We all have to play a role, obviously there's been a change of manager. It's been a positive change in terms of performances, tonight aside.

"We have to keep trying to pick up points in the Premier League and move up the table."
