Bruno Labbadia was denied victory in his first game as Wolfsburg boss as hosts Mainz claimed a point from a 1-1 Bundesliga draw.
Josip Brekalo fired the 14th-placed Wolves ahead, but Yoshinori Muto levelled to stop the visitors pulling four points clear of Mainz, who leapfrog Werder Bremen, in the battle to avoid the drop.
It took Wolfsburg only six minutes to take the lead at the Opel Arena as Croatian forward Brekalo reacted fastest to poke the ball beyond Robin Zentner following a corner.
Josuha Guilavogui went close to making it 2-0 when he headed against the crossbar but, just before the break, Mainz equalised as Muto steered in Gerrit Holtmann's pass.
Wolfsburg were further frustrated when their former Mainz striker Yunus Malli missed an open goal after the hour mark, and heads were in hands when Daniel Didavi clattered a post with a late cross-shot.
