Malawi have sacked Kinnah Phiri as coach of the Flames, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) have announced.

The 58-year-old has paid the price after leading the Southern Africans into a string of uninspiring performances, the latest their 3-1 humiliation by Bafana Bafana.

Phiri promised to beat Ghana to the 2013 AFCON qualification slot but failed to deliver as the Black Stars defeated them in both legs in a 3-0 aggregate.

"Football Association of Malawi would like to announce that at its emergency executive meeting held on 12th January 2013, a decision was taken to relieve the national coach and the entire technical panel of its duties with immediate effect owing to a poor run of results of the Malawi national team," said a statement from FAM.

"This decision also applies to the position of the Technical Director. Having dissolved the technical panel, it has been agreed that Malawi Government should terminate the employment contract of the concerned parties."

Malawians called for the head of Phiri after failing to qualify for the 2013 AFCON but the Malawi Football Association kept faith in the coach.
