Man Utd legend Schmeichel to attend Airtel Rising Stars African Championship

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel will attend the inaugural Airtel Rising Stars African Championships and Soccer Clinic in Kenya.

The Uefa Champions League winner is one of several dignitaries to grace the championships which started on Thursday with their presence.

Schmeichel will however be only available for the finals on Saturday.

The Danish goalkeeping legend will be in Nairobi for the Championships as part of Airtel’s partnership with Manchester United.

The English club will be primarily offering technical support for the Rising Stars competition and the Soccer Clinic in Nairobi through the Manchester United Soccer Schools program.

Ghana is being represented at the championships by a team from the Soutern select side that emerged national champions last month.

They will be doing battle against 14 other teams from Burkina Faso, Chad, Republic of Congo (Congo Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Madagascar, Nigeria, Niger, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Airtel Rising Stars is an annual, multi-country grassroots soccer initiative that offers young boys and girls aged U-17 the opportunity to play, compete and showcase their talent to selectors in their respective countries.

This year’s championship will be officially opened by Kenya’s Prime Minister, Raila Odinga and will be graced by Ambassadors representing the other 14 other nations that will participate in the football extravaganza where 500 rising stars will be on show.
