English giants Manchester United are poised to open talks with Leicester City over a $3 million deal for their Ghanaian striker Jeffrey Schlupp.

United are in pole position to sign the Ghana international and are expected to enter advanced negotiations with the Championship club this week.

Schlupp has played in the last two under-21s games for United after he was invited for a trial in January.

The 20-year-old has impressed coaching staff at Old Trafford and tentative discussions have been held regarding a transfer worth an eventual £2.5 million after add-ons.

Nigel Pearson, the Leicester manager, said: "I think we'll be discussing this week what the next step is.

"He's done well at United, he's played the last two games that he can play there so clearly it's going to have some effect this week."

Schlupp can be recalled by Leicester at any time and could be in contention for the game against Leeds United on Tuesday night.

Any deal with United would mean he is ineligible to play for them until next season.
