Johor Bahru: Argentine coach Mario Gomez has parted company with Malaysian 2017 AFC Champions League hopefuls Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and been replaced by Mexican Benjamin Mora.
Gomez had guided JDT to five trophies since arriving at the club in 2015, including the 2015 AFC Cup crown which they earned after beating Istiklol of Tajikistan 1-0.
The Southern Tigers landed a domestic treble last season after securing the Malaysia Super League, Charity Shield and FA Cup titles.
Fifty-one-year-old Mora was formerly head coach of JDT II, who currently play in the second division, the Malaysia Premier League, before taking over the mantle from Gomez.
Previously he managed Mexican clubs Cafetaleros, Guerreros, Gallos Blancos and Atlante.
JDT will play Bangkok United in the AFC Champions League Preliminary Stage 2 encounter on January 31, the winner of which will enter a Play-off against Japan’s Gamba Osaka for a spot in Group H of the tournament proper.
