South Africa-based defender Awal Mohammed touched down at the Kotoka International Airport on Sunday morning ahead of Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations double qualifiers.

The Maritzburg United centre-back defender is making a return into the team after missing out on 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Awal has started this season with a bang in the South African Premier Soccer and is desperate to replicate such fine form at the national level.

“All I can say is that it feels good to be back to the to the team and hopefully I can help when called upon,” the former Kotoko defender told

Awal was a member of the Ghana squad which played at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

This is chance to take over from either Boye or Mensah. He has to be hungry though.

@Mr south africa. It's a very small world and communication is very efficient today!. The last match Awal played for his club was against Wits on August 20. They lost that match by a lone goal. Since then, they have played two matches, one against Chippa United which they won by 3 goals to nil. While John Paintsil and Mohammed Anas played full time in that match, Awal was an unused substitute! The next match was yesterday, a draw against Free State Stars, both Paintsil and Anas again played but Awal was not even on the subs bench! And yet according to you he played a good game!

But if he didn't play how did he qualify to join the team? Anyway, I've forgotten that there is very little logic used in running our national team these days
