South Africa-based defender Awal Mohammed touched down at the Kotoka International Airport on Sunday morning ahead of Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations double qualifiers.

The Maritzburg United centre-back defender is making a return into the team after missing out on 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Awal has started this season with a bang in the South African Premier Soccer and is desperate to replicate such fine form at the national level.

“All I can say is that it feels good to be back to the to the team and hopefully I can help when called upon,” the former Kotoko defender told

Awal was a member of the Ghana squad which played at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

  1. Mr south africa says:

he played a good game yesterday…..good luck to him and Ghana.

  2. anokwale says:

This is chance to take over from either Boye or Mensah. He has to be hungry though.

  3. Adebayo says:

@Mr south africa. It’s a very small world and communication is very efficient today!. The last match Awal played for his club was against Wits on August 20. They lost that match by a lone goal. Since then, they have played two matches, one against Chippa United which they won by 3 goals to nil. While John Paintsil and Mohammed Anas played full time in that match, Awal was an unused substitute! The next match was yesterday, a draw against Free State Stars, both Paintsil and Anas again played but Awal was not even on the subs bench! And yet according to you he played a good game!

  4. papa nkrumah says:

But if he didn’t play how did he qualify to join the team? Anyway, I’ve forgotten that there is very little logic used in running our national team these days
