McDan Ga-Adangbe Unity Cup 2017 launched …$2,000 plus giant trophy for winners

The 2017 edition of the annual McDan Ga-Adangbe Unity Football Tournament has been launched with the various communities in high spirit to chase the giant trophy.

The event which was launched on Saturday at the La Traditional Council premises saw elders of the various communities calling on the youth to live in peace, harmony and unity, and earn call – ups in the national football teams.

The eight teams to compete are drawn from La, Ga Mashie, Osu, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Prampram and Ada.

At stake is a giant trophy plus a cash prize of $2,000 for the winners to be presented after the final on December 3, 2017 at the La Town Park.

Nii Obodai Adai IV, Mankralo of La said the football tournament is a laudable initiative that can lead to other endeavors.

Nii Oten Granaky I, Abafum Akutsonste said sports has many benefits and was elated that a son of La from the Ga Adangbe traditional area is the main sponsor of the competition which will produce many players for the top clubs in the region and the national teams subsequently.

He noted that Gas are very talented and skillful in sports, hence such an initiative will yield many positive results.

Obodai Sai, Marketing Manager of McDan Group who represented Dr. Dan Mackorley, said this year is going to be an improvement in the organization of the tournament and prayed that the footballers who are going to be the focus of the teeming fans must also raise the standard of their game.

He expressed concern that McDan believes in quality and hoped that the best football would be displayed.

Nii Adjetey Dormon, chief organizer and chairman of the local planning committee formed to run the smooth organization of the tournament said the runners up will take home a handsome package of $1,000 and the Goal king getting $150.

“Other prizes are $200 for the most exciting player and $150 for the best defender or goal keeper, the best behaved supporters will get $200 and all the participating teams will collect 500ghc as tournament appearance fees” he explained.

All the teams were presented with quality branded jerseys and mitre footballs, with the Royal Genesis Entertainment dishing out popular kpanlogo music at the launch.

Some of the dignitaries and traditional leaders who graced the ceremony were J.T. Aryeh – La stool secretary, Asafoatse Kabutey Assem III representing Ada, Hon. Thomas Tetteh Brown Boye- Doe, Nene Osusey Akwerh II also from Ada, Nene Hodoklamah Sabbah Agbo III from Kesse – Ada and Sir Josiah Boye – Doe.

Emmanuel Armah 'Senegal', a former Black Stars player lauded the initiative and urged footballers from the Ga Adangbe tradition to work hard to earn places in the national teams.

Some popular Ga players who excelled for Ghana Black Stars include Nii Odartey Lamptey, Sam Johnson, Joe Addo, the Saba brothers, Peter Ofori Quaye, Awule Quaye, Edmund Copson, Godwin Attram, Stephen Appiah, Laryea Kingston, Richard Kingston and Christian Atsu Twasam who won the MVP at the African Cup of Nations, as well as Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey who captained the national team against Saudi Arabia recently.
