Defender John Mensah has revealed injuries denied his former side Sunderland an Europe spot last season.

The Ghana captain, who himself was a frequent visitor to the infirmary, claims the Black Cats firepower was watered down after several players got injured.

Steve Bruce’s side failed to keep afloat during the second half of the last campaign following an impressive start.

Sunderland grabbed the headlines after shock wins over giants, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Mensah, who has returned to his parent club Lyon after the expiration of his loan spell, highlighted the frustration in the Sunderland’s dressing room.

“I think that the only thing that went wrong was the injuries in the squad that came at the same time,” he told MTNFootball.com.

“Injuries are part of the game but the way most of the key players suffered injuries at the crucial stage of the season took something out of the team. If all the players were fit we would have qualified for Europe."
