Pals for life, Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah

Michael Essien is full of praise for Stephen Appiah ahead of the former Ghana captain’s testimonial match on Saturday.

A host of world football stars have arrived in Accra to play in a one-off game being used by Appiah to bid his final goodbye to the sport while saying thank you to the fans that supported him since day one.

Appiah was part of a unique Black Stars midfield quartet comprising Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien and Laryea Kingston in the lead up to Ghana’s first ever qualification to the World Cup.

It was with Michael Essien, in particular, that made Ghana one of the most feared opponents on the continent with their strong combination in midfield.

The duo have remain friends ever since but Essien was unable to make the trip to Ghana to play in the testimonial match.

The newly signed Panathinaikos player however reserved special praise for his former international captain.

“Last game, fantastic captain, brother & great player.Congratulations on an excellent career bro.Welldone big bro.#legend#Tonardo#capitano????????,” he posted in Instagram.

Essien is believed to have made a low-keyed donation in a fund-raising event in honour of Stephen Appiah on Friday night.

The former Chelsea star’s wife, Akosua Puni was present at the event to make the donation on behalf of his superstar husband.
