The re-awarding of the contract to a Chinese firm has been attributed for the delay in the construction a brand new stadium in Cape Coast.

The 20,000 capacity stadium has been on the books of the Ghana government for three years and has been captured in previous national budgets including next year’s.

But Sports Minister

“There was a company (Pol-Mot International) which had a memorandum of understanding to do the construction but there was no concrete agreement brought before parliament to start the project,” he told Takoradi-based Melody FM.

“So with the change over in government, they came back claiming they have won the bid to undertake the project but it happens that His Excellency the President also had got an offer from a Chinese company.

“We are therefore looking forward to the Chinese company to deliver however preparatory work are being done, leveling of the place and drainage are being done.”

The MP for Anlo however added full gear construction of the stadium will take much longer since the agreement with the said Chinese company is yet to be finalized.

“It however lies with formalizing the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Chinese company and it is something we will be working on immediately after the budget has been approved.

“It is something I intend taking up with the Finance Minister, not only for Cape Coast but also for the Ho stadium so I can’t promise anything just yet.”
