Mubarak Wakaso says he was not surprised by his sterling performance in Ghana’s opening 2017 AFCON qualifier against Mauritius because he has been working very hard behind the scenes.

The 24-year-old was widely considered to be the Man-of-the-Match in the 7-1 mauling of Mauritius in the game played earlier this month at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Wakaso’s impressive display came as surprise to many who even questioned his selection into the Black Stars due to his struggle for regular first team action at club level.

The former Espanyol man’s loan move to Celtic from Rubin Kazan turned out to be a disaster as he could only manage just five games for the Scottish giants.

But the midfielder reminded many of how good he could be in the massive win over Mauritius.

Wakaso revealed he had been working very hard behind the scenes to keep his form despite his lack of regular competitive action at club level.

“I am a hardworking player, even if I am not playing I work hard behind everybody,” he told Africanfootball.com.

“I know what I want to achieve so I work very hard behind the scenes so I wasn’t surprised at all [by his performance in the game against Mauritius].”

Wakaso who has also played Elche and Villarreal in Spain is set to return to Rubin Kazan following the expiration of his loan stint at Celtic.
