The new Ghana Premier League trophy was acquired from Istanbul, according to a radio station report.

The giant gold trophy was handed over to the Ghana FA on Monday and will be given to the eventual winners of the Ghanaian top flight.

The trophy – the second largest in world football – was paraded on the principal streets of Accra in a unique trophy tour before it was handed over to the Ghana FA.

The origin of the 90cm giant trophy can however be traced from the Turkish capital Istanbul, according to Metro FM.

A delegation from the Ghana FA travelled to Istanbul to secure the new Premier League trophy and its miniatures.

A club will win the new trophy for keeps upon clinching the Ghanaian Premier League title for the third time.

A miniature of the giant trophy will be handed to the champions until the title is won for keeps.

The trophy was provided for by headline sponsors of the Ghana Premier League First Capital Plus Bank who signed a partnership agreement with the Ghana FA worth $10m over a five-year period.
