The Daily Mail says Toon head coach Steve McClaren has recommended the club make an ambitious move for Swansea and England midfielder Shelvey.
Former Three Lions boss McClaren wants owner Mike Ashley to invest in British players instead of shopping on the continent as he attempts to build a team spirit sadly lacking in his current squad.
Newcastle are one point above the relegation zone and supporters are growing increasingly disillusioned with McClaren and his under-performing players.
