Coming off the back of three heavy defeats that have coincided with Alan Pardew’s ban for head-butting Hull City’s David Meyler, the manager has stated openly that this is now one of the toughest moments of his career.
With a poor run of results, despite safety being secured, the fans’ focus is now looking forward to the promised players the club will look to bring in this summer; and they will need quality to replace the attacking threat they lost in the sale of Yohan Cabaye in January.
Majeed Waris would certainly be an exciting prospect for toon fans with the 22 year old forward, who belongs to Spartak Moscow, coming off the back of some blistering form on loan at French Ligue 1 strugglers Valenciennes.
He’s scored 9 goals in 12 appearances for the French side who now have a fighting chance of staying up, largely thanks to the poaching instincts of the Ghanaian.
He also has 5 assists to his name and the form he is in now is no fluke, having already proved himself in the Swedish top division, where he scored 22 goals in 25 games in 2012. Added to which he has 3 goals in 4 full internationals for Ghana, and looks set to be on the plane to Brazil.
Admittedly the Premier League would represent easily the biggest challenge of his career, and it remains to be seen whether he can make the transition with the same prolific returns – it is always hard to tell how a player is going to react to playing in England.
However his movement in and around the box, along with his pace and instincts for goal would suggest that he’d be an extremely good buy for the magpies.
The problem for Pardew is that with Hull, Leicester and potentially Everton (who may well be looking to replace Lukaku) all reportedly interested in him; whether Newcastle will be the best offer on the table for both the player and for his parent club Spartak Moscow, is something that remains to be seen.
Newcastle appear to be stuck in a rut; lacking ambition, with an owner who does not seem to be committed to progressing the club.
A buy like this would help to give that picture a different complexion, but if I were a Toon fan I wouldn’t be holding my breath.
