Nigeria striker Peter Odemwingie has edged past Ghanaian player Michael Essien for the player of the month award in England.

The Chelsea star was tipped for the award following his excellent showing for the league leaders last month.

But Odemwingie who plays from West Brom was voted as the best player after his impressive month during Premier League matches.

The Nigeria international, who joined the club from Lokomotiv Moscow in August, has impressed this season, scoring three goals in five matches.

The Baggies have taken seven points in three matches in the past month, including wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, and are sixth in the table.

West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo has been named Premier League manager of the month for September.

Essien is back to his brilliant best after a season on the sidelines with a ligament injury, adding goals to his all-round powerful midfield play.
