No-player should be begged to play for the Black Stars - Armstrong-Mortagbe

Posted On Tuesday, 5th March 2013

Andre and Jordan Ayew have retired temporarily from the Black Stars

Ghanaian football consultant Neil Armstrong Mortagbe says players should not be begged to represent their country.

The former Ghana FA presidential aspirant has waded into debate following the premature retirements of Marseille brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew.

The two brothers have requested for break from international duty after they were snubbed for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Andre’s failure to arrive in camp on scheduled accounted for his axing while his younger brother was simply overlooked for the continental showpiece.

The Ghana FA has asked the two players to rescind their decision which has sparked massive debate in the West African country.

While others believe they should be coerced into returning to the national team, there are others who believe they should be left alone.

Mortagbe says begging players to play for the national team is a recipe for disaster.

“I believe the two players are too young to retire from the national team,” Mortagbe told Happy FM

“There should be a dialogue between the parties to resolve the differences but to suggest the country should beg players to play for the national team is wide off the mark.

“No player should be begged to play for the national team. That is out of the question.”

King Faisal owner Alhaji Karim Grunzah, ex-international Samuel Osei and Tudu Mighty Jets owner Abu Sondonko are expected to hold meetings with the Ayew family to have the brothers rescind their decision

And no criminals and idiots should be hired to run the FA as well.

  2. Edward says:

Ghana abounds a lot of talents. Even if we drop twenty two players of the current national team, we can produce even better ones.

    • King says:

You are very right!. Zambia lost all their national team players with exception of Kalusha Bwalya in an air disaster off the coast of Gabon in 1993 yet they were able to raise an entirely new team that reached the finals of CAN 1994 and lost to a very tough Nigerian side that held the flag of Africa very high in that year’s world cup. People should give us a break!

      • maka says:

@king, and @edward; we are still talking, abi? 32 years…and still talking! And they raised an entirely different team that did what? Reached the finals….! They reached the finals sir…they did not win it! Reaching the finals 100 times will never make you a winner of the ultimate…after all, history only remembers the winners not “almost winners”!

    • Nana Kwadwo says:

      Thank you my brother.

    • lalasu says:

Edward u’re right. Ghana abounds in talent n so those that think that without them, the team cant succeed must be ignored. they dont know that playing for the nation improves their ‘CV’. so if u want to be begged to enrich ur own self, then its not Ghana. it is most Ghanaian football lovers that do not think deep n are shallow minded n attribute such developings to all sort of ridiculous issues.

  3. Fu-Chu says:

@Edward, that is simply not true. Tell me who is better than KPB, Ayews, Essien, and Muntari? If that was the case we should have won the African Cup and Zambia should not be in poll position for the Brazil World Cup qualifiers.

  4. Ben says:

No one person is bigger than the nation.if they are true patroits they will come back

  5. Samedge7 says:

Mr.Armstrong, where were you when Gfa were asking the Ayew Brothers to rescind their decision of retirement. You should have raise your point before Gfa rejecting their(Ayew Brothers) retirement letter. Now the boys are aware that Alhaji Grunsah,Osei Kuffour & Mr. Abu Sondonko are about to meet them on this issue. Again, Ghana has now being pushed to a tight corner bcos the Zambians are awarded with 3 points concerning the issue of the Sudanese fielding in an unqualified player for the qualifiers. It is about time Ghana must select players to win the remaining qualifiers to get there (Brazil 2014) so please Mr. Armstrong don’t try cause further havoc to the national team.

  6. Lite-Green says:

    Fu-Chu, 4get about Edward & Ghanaman. I think they a day-old in soccer.

  7. King says:

The Ayews were in Gabon and Eq Guinea last year and we did not win. Why some people arguing as tho we would have automatically won afcon 2013 if the two brothers were there? Much as we want to implore the FA and the Black Stars handlers to employ more tact in handling the egos of our players, the fact still remains that no player is bigger than the Blackstars and no one should should be begged to play for the national team PERIOD!! These players cannot always take us for granted. When they haven’t had the chance to play for the national teams they feel it is an honour to have the privilege to represent your nation. When that opportunity is finally presented to them and Ghanaians begin to sing their praises, they soon forget they were the same people who subtly begged for inclusion and begin to feel they should be begged to play.

Neil is daammn right! They should be advised on their ill-fated and premature decision and never be begged to play for Ghana. Let the boot-lickers and blind hero worshipers say whatever they want!

    • Randy says:

With this type of mentality, when are we going to win something? Please use your head not your emotion. Our best players are always cut off or blindly snubbed for major matches.
If we had Essien, KPB, Abeyie, Muntari and Dede in South Africa, the trophy would have come home. Nigerian were praying to avoid Ghana, because our matches against Nigeria are always fire-works, even if Ghana squad is made of our U20 boys. You remember Angola 2010?

  8. Dr Who says:

Its only a fool who will beg any player to play for Ghana.

  9. mojahadine says:

As far as I am concerned they should not come back to make way for better players to evolve. Everyone is so fixated by these average players just because they are the sons of Abedi Pele. They are not even anywhere near the talent of their father but everyone wants to crown them because of genetics. Players like these and Asamoah Gyan, Derek Boateng should not even be in the Ghana Black Stars but they get calls due to politics.

And as a reminder to all who will be celebrating this so called independence of Ghana to look back and see what a sorry ass country Ghana is, a country that should have been a beacon for all Africa when it had its independence 56years ago, still looks the same as the old undeveloped, third world, filty, smelly, corrupt, uncivilized, open sewage, delapidated hospitals, bad roads, dirty drinking water, unplanned cities, pungent markets, deficated beaches with visionless leaders that I grew with, still spending all their energies and moneys on football and nothing else.

All those countries who had their indepence the same time as us have all improved? Every independence day from now on should be used as a day of morning for the sad state of development the country is in now.

  10. bawah says:

WE BROUGHT A NEW TEAM TO THE AFCON AND THE RESULT IS THERE:BURKINA, CAPE VERDE AND MALI TOYING AND TEACHING GHANAIANS HOW TO PLAY FOOTBALL AND FORCING US TO DEFEND.THE BOYS ARE GOOD AND THEY HAVE TAKEN A GOOD DECISION!

  11. samuel says:

Only fools can go and bagg this fools. Ghana fa should forgot this guys and move national term forworld pls.

  12. Chu says:

Dede is joking at his own peril. Remember how he got a starting role in the world cup? It was because Muntari thought he’s was indispensable. Frank Acheampong and Depay are yet to be revealed. And if we get yet another star you can be in Muntari’s humble pie seat. For Jordan, you will never last in blackstars because you are seeking bad counselling and is an example of an uncultured child. Where were they when we lost to Zambia last year? They must apologise to us and not The GFA.

    • maka says:

acheampong playing in a lower league b4 now moving to anderlecht is ok…but her’s not at dede’s level yet; thats how we hyped atsu…and we all saw he’s not there yet at the afcon! as for depay…dont even count ur chickens b4 they hatch! he wont play for this “yenkyenni” gfa! he wont play for Ghana so forget! its another balotelli in the off-ing! so chu, please….come again! the earlier the FA is cleaned, the better…and i careless when fifa bans us —-interfering is necessary when it will yield good results! cos there’s good and bad interfering…and we should go for the good! cos soccer is wasting Ghana’s money that could have been invested in hospitals, schools, electricity…etc….for over 32 years….and there’s nothing to show! will any good business man or wise thinking fella continue with such a vain venture? its financial loss to the state!

  13. @Randy….That Nigerian team would have smoked that ghana team’ that we all saw at Afcon..sure

  14. @Randy….That Nigerian team would have smoked that ghana team’ that we all saw at Afcon..sure They would have blown them away without’ ghana should be happy to have avoided ‘ The Super Eagles…

    • Ghanaman says:

The super chickens that struggled to beat Burkina Twice?? You are sh1t and average. Call us for a friendly and lets see who wins!!

      • maka says:

@ghanaman….massa….stop talking crap. they struggled to beat burkina twice…..n what did burkina do to us? why are some of us ghanaians never objective? with that useless team, what could we hv done against nigeria? aren’t u ashamed of how we even played? be objective for once….the way u are talking is how we’ve been talking for over 32 years and counting…n still have nothing to show!

when we had 4 afcon cups, nigeria had one….but now, they have 3….and we are still “talking”….egypt had 3….when we had 4…..now they have 7….! massa…..stop living in a fools paradise….cos our team is nothing to write home about due to foolishness….politics…n corruption with cronyism! we shall remain where we are n as we are!

Come on guys.beg who.we r not like Togo who depends on one player in adebaryo.remember the pucumpine warrior slogan?

  16. kimco says:

@maka: i can’t believe u. A team that was raised anew reaches the finals and loses to a near unbeatable nigerian team and u say it nothing. I know ur ass did not jux say that. Pls come again.
And about the ayews God knows i have never seen that talent that people keep touting as wonderful… To the extent of spoutin rubbish like ”if the ayews had ffed us, we would have won the cup” hellooo, somebody home, gabon, equitorial guinea 2012, just last year, do u remember that? Bunch of nonsense

  17. kimco says:

@ randy- i see ur point and i raise u ghana 2008. Do u remember that tourney? Yessoooo, everyone of those players u mentioned was present, playing for blackstars. Oh and get this, it was on home soil too. We all know how well that went. We won third place in full glory, lol. Quite sad how pourous ur point is.
Know this, i’m not saying we don’t need our best.. Just saying that our best haven’t changed our fate even on home soil so please give us a fuqing break with ur bs, they’re replaceable. The ayews aren’t even the best on the team and if they say they want to retire, albeit temporal, cool, but to beg them? I already lost my dignity as a ghanaian when ballotelli told us all those rubbish, with kpb also adding to the hurt in volumes. Please let’s salvage the least bit dignity we have. SAY NO TO RUBBISH.

  20. KD says:

IF SOME PLAYERS ARE BEGGED TO PLAY FOR THEIR NATION,HOW
WOULD OTHER PLAYERS WHO STAYED WITH THE TEAM FEEL.?
THE GROUP OF PLAYERS WHO QUALIFIED GHANA TO THE TWO
WORLD CUP APPEARANCES WERE CERTAINLY NOT THE BEST TEAM EVER ASSEMBLED,BUT THE HUMILITY,DEDICATION,UNITY AND DISCIPLINE COUPLE WITH THE CHARISMA OF TONADO BROUGHT THOSE HAPPY MOMENTS.THE ERA WHERE PLAYERS WERE BEGGED TO PLAY,GHANA DON’T EVEN GET THE SEMIS.THE GFA STOP PUSHING THEMSELVES IN A POSITION WHERE SOME FEW AVERAGE PLAYERS WOULD TAKE HEART BEAT OF THE NATION
    HOSTAGE.

  21. Kudjo says:

I am tired of this shit, the next AFCON cup we’ll be talking about 34 years no cup,yet we talk so much like we’re the best team.lets be humble and learn from Nigeria, they have won it 3 times with 16 teams participating unlike us when it was only 4 teams or a round robin tournament!!!

  22. @ghana man…You are the BIGGEST FOOL.. Who ever lived…it’s a pity you transitted from a noble country like ghana, with so mant intellectuals. U ‘re a disgrace the entire ghana people and you should be deported to the Abbiss where you belong…FOOL

  23. kimco says:

@ghanaman: that’s not even the point of this thread. But go on, make our day.

  24. Blakroze GH says:

@Maka…..God bless u for pouring my heart out like that, may u live to be any age of ur choice and success always be seen in ur house man,WE GHANAIANS(me especially) DEY TALK TOO MUCH, so in the light of that I’ve gone into phoenix mode, tearing all my feathers and burning up so I’d rise from the ashes stronger than ever and I suggest the gfa do likewise

  25. Don says:

This is that kind of arrogant and baseless attitudes by some of our so called elders who should know better, they speak as if they owe the world, instead of trying to solve a deep problem in the GFA, Coach, players and the management, this Neil guy talk as if he has no sense, no one says we should go and beg, and the Ayew brothers are not saying they need someone to come and beg them, if your effort, your commitment to die for your country is undermine and block by some selfish and corrupt people at the FA who are using the Black Stars as their personal property then there is a problem, and even there is nothing one can do even if your are the best footballer on earth.

  26. Ghanians are making a lot of sense in this forum, and i say Kudos to u guys man…

  27. selfmade says:

Fuck jordan ayew!! He ain’t shit and he just a piece of shit!!! His more talent uncles has play faithfully for Ghana without complains!!! Kwame ayew, sola ayew all served Ghana without respect and decorum and u just a new comer want to spoil that by issuing ultimatum!!! He hasn’t achieved nothing and am waiting for any son of a bitch to attack selfmade here for talking about ayews and let see how i ll torn that pervert motherfucker into pieces!!! Dede has an issue and i respect that because dede is more responsible under all based as for leaving dede but not Jordan because he hasn’t proved anything yet !!! Dede absence was felt not jordan because he is yet to prove himself at bs!!! Jordan is not important to the bs because this fella has played only four matches for the bs and he wants to consider himself big!!! He is delusional and fucking hallucinating!!! His absence was not felt at afcon and ll never be felt!!! Dede absence was felt not u,dude!!! Wash your game with clear Maseille water, start pull your pants up like a German burga andpl
