North Africa rules again in Confederation Cup
Esperance failed to qualify.

North African sides have again dominated in continental club competitions as the eight teams to make up the group stages of the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup were decided.

There were ugly scenes in Morocco where Kawkab Marrakech defeated more fancied Al-Merreikh of Sudan 2-0 to take their tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Referee Eric Otogo-Castane had to be protected by police after the game from angry Sudanese players and officials having earlier received a slap to the face by an unnamed Al-Merreikh member of the technical team.

Several Al-Merreikh players appeared to be trying to physically assault the referee at the final whistle, but were stopped by local officials and police.

Mamelodi Sundowns crashed out of the competition after a 2-0 loss in Ghana against Medeama SC that saw them exit on the away goals rule after a 303 aggregate score.

It is an embarrassing setback for the recently crowned South African champions against a side currently 11th in the Ghana Premier League who have an interim coach in charge.

Defending champions Etoile de Sahel of Tunisia reached the pool stages despite a 1-0 loss at Gabonese side CF Mounana as they triumphed 2-1 on aggregate.

It was a similar story for Tanzanian outfit Young Africans, who lost 1-0 against Sagrada Esperança in Angola, but their good work in the first game saw them advance 2-1 over the two legs.

A late penalty for Libyan side Al Ahli Tripoli saw them advance past Egyptian side Misr Elmaqasah on the away goals rule after their game was tied at 1-1.

Finally, Moroccan side FUS Rabat breezed into the group stages with a 4-0 home win over Stade Malien, taking the tie by the same scoreline on aggregate.

Pick of the goals was a remarkable 40-yard effort from Rabat player Mohammed Nahiri that will be among the best goals scored on the continent in 2016.

On Tuesday night, Tunisian giants Esperance were dumped out of the competition by MO Bejaia from Algeria, but current CAF Champions League holders TP Mazembe advanced despite a 2-1 loss to Stade Gabesien from Tunisia.
