Olivier Giroud came off the bench to net a late equaliser for Arsenal as they secured a 1-1 draw against Southampton at St Mary's.

Southampton opened the scoring inside just three minutes when Dusan Tadic slid in Charlie Austin following a mistake from Per Mertesacker, with the striker then slotting past Petr Cech to net his fourth goal in four games.

The hosts could have doubled their lead just a minute later when Tadic opened up the Arsenal defence again with a ball to Austin, but this time he was unable to find a way past Cech, while the striker struck a Gunners post shortly after, though he had already been flagged offside.

Arsenal had their first real attempt on goal just after the half-hour mark, with Aaron Ramsey striking first time on the edge of the box following Alexis Sanchez's pass, but Fraser Forster did well to get down low and tip the ball away.

Southampton came close to finding a second in the 62nd minute when Oriol Romeu picked up the ball and had a go from distance, only to see his effort crash back off the bar, before Ryan Bertrand just missed the target a few minutes later following a mistake from Laurent Koscielny.

Arsenal brought on Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere and Giroud as the second half wore on, and with two minutes left on the clock, up popped Giroud to head home a Sanchez cross into the bottom corner.
