Otumfuo Challenge Cup: Anniversary game between Kotoko and Ashantigold to go on as planned after earlier threat of boycott

The hugely-anticipated Otumfuo Challenge Cup between Kotoko and Ashantigold will go on as planned following an earlier threat of boycott, GHANAsoccernet.com can confirm.

The miners threatened to pull the plugs on the game after sports analyst Kofi Appiah questioned the club’s recent Premier League title feat on popular radio station Peace FM.

Out-going Chief Executive Kudjoe Fianoo was left livid with claims Ashantigold are not worthy champions of the Ghanaian top-flight and particularly with the platform offered to make the reported negative comment on the club’s achievement.

The annual Otumfuo Challenge Cup is being together by My Sports Organization in collaboration with Despite Group of Companies – which has many subsidiaries including Peace FM and United Television.

The newly-crowned champions feel the organizers shot themselves in the foot by allowing the sports journalist to ridicule the achievement of one of the participating teams on the same platform which is spearheading the Cup game.

"The issue has been blown out of proportion. We have spoken and everything has been rectified," head of My Sports Organisation Anim Addo told GHANAsoccernet.com

"We don't want the minor incident to take anything away from the match and so let's move on.

"We are expecting a great game between the two teams and can say that we're ready."

Kumasi is buzzing with heightened expectation as two of the finest clubs go at each other in the prestigious Cup match at the Baba Yara stadium on Sunday.

The match forms part of activities to mark the 80th anniversary of the Porcupine Warriors with the threat of boycott not taking anything way from the match.
