Performance of Players Abroad: Goal-drought weekend for Ghanaian stars but Asamoah returns & Essien wins

No Ghanaian player scored in a top-flight league abroad over the weekend but former Chelsea and Real Madrid star Michael Essien won his first game with Greek side Panathinaikos, plus the round-up from all the leagues.

Attacker Jordan Ayew was voted man-of-the-match in Aston Villa's 1-1 draw with Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Elsewhere there goals in the Italian third-tier for midfielder Daniel Kofi Agyei while former Inter Milan Primavera attacker Said Ahmed Said scored in Portugal.

And, former Bechem United forward Eric Warden netted the only of the game Olympiakos Volos in Greece.

ENGLAND

Forward Jordan Ayew was voted man-of-match for Aston Villa in their 1-1 draw with Southampton at the St Mary's Stadium.

Leicester City went atop the Premier League table following their 3-0 battering of Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium in Welsh. Ghana winger Andre Ayew played the entire minutes of the game for the Swans while Jeffrey Schlupp came off the Leicester bench in the 90th minute to play.

English-born midfielder Bernard Mensah could not make the Watford squad for their 2-0 triumph over Norwich City. But in the Norwich team was two Ghanaian players (Alexander Tettey and Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe) who have committed their international futures to Norway and Belgium respectively.

Another English-born Ghanaian youngster Joshua Onomah warmed the Tottenham Hotspurs bench in their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion.

Chelsea were stunned 1-0 at home by minnows Bournemouth on Saturday. Ghana defender Baba Rahman earned his third Premier League start and played 83 minutes of the game. Injured Christian Atsu missed out of the Bournemouth squad for the game.

Winger Albert Adomah was the star-man for Middlesbrough as they claimed a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town to temporary take charge of the Championship table on Friday.

Still in the Championship, Dutch-born Ghana international Elvis Manu warmed the bench for Brighton in their 3-2 win over Charlton Athletic.

There was no Koby Arthur in the Birmingham City squad for their 2-0 home loss against Huddersfield. The former Liberty Professionals starlet has been demoted to the Blues second-string side.

In the round of 64 in the English FA Cup, Newport County managed a golden 1-0 win over Barnet. Former Arsenal starlet and Ghana U20 triallist Zak Ansah was introduced by Newport in the dying embers of the game. English-born forward Junior Andy Yiadom was booked in the 68th minute and played the entire game for the vanquished.

Leicester City loanee Joe Dodoo played 64 minutes for Bury when they won 1-0 at Rochdale on Sunday afternoon.

Derek Asamoah came off the Carlisle United bench to play in their 5-0 win over Welling. There was no Kevin Osei in the Carlisle team for the game.

FRANCE

Lille applied the brakes on Caen after beating them 2-1 at their own backyard. Ghanaian defender Dennis Appiah played the full 90 minutes for Caen but Manchester City loanee Yaw Yeboah missed out of the Lille squad for the game.

Injured Grejohn Kyei watched from the stands as his Stade Reims side were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Troyes.

Suspended Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris watched from the screens as his Lorient side claimed a vital 3-2 away win at Toulouse.

In the Coupe de France, Ghana youth defender Emmanuel Ntim warmed the Valenciennes bench in their 2-1 win over Beauvais on Saturday.

Injured Jonathan Mensah was omitted from the Evian TG squad for their 1-0 win over Lyon Duchere in the same competition.

Ghanaian midfielder Joachim Adukor played for Bezier when they suffered elimination after losing 1-0 against Frejus Saint Raphael.

ITALY

Midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah returned from injury to play full throttle for Juventus in their 2-0 triumph over Lazio on Friday night.

Torino stretched their unbeaten run to three games after holding AS Roma to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino. Ghana midfielder Afriyie Acquah was booked in the 36th minute for Unsportsmanlike conduct and he played the full 90 minutes.

Ghana midfielder Godfred Donsah was unused by Bologna when they managed a 3-2 win over Napoli on Sunday.

Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu played the entire game and was booked in the 68th minute for tripping a Fiorentina player when Udinese suffered a 3-0 loss against Fiorentina.

Injured Raman Chibsah watched his Frosinone side succumbed to a 2-0 home loss against visiting Chievo Verona.

Former Inter Milan midfielder Alfred Duncan was unused by Sassuolo in their 3-1 away win over Sampdoria.

In the Serie B, injuries forced defender Masahudu Alhassan and Amidu Salifu to miss Perugia's 1-0 win over Modena.

Still in the Serie B, AC Milan attacker Kingsley Boateng came off the bench to play for Bari in their 3-0 battering of Ascoli. While Boateng was coming off the bench to play, defender Bright Addae was being replaced for his lack of steel in defence. Inter Milan loanee Isaac Donkor was not in the Bari squad for the game.

Maxwell Acosty played 88 minutes for Latina in their 3-1 win over Livorno. There was no Nelson Atiagli in the Latina squad for the game.

Forward Ransford Selasi came off the Pescara bench to play in their 2-2 draw with Spezia.

Midfielder Moses Odjer was booked in the 23rd minute and played the entire game for Salernitana in their 0-0 draw at Vicenza.

Former Inter Milan midfielder Isaac Ntow was not in the Como side that held Cagliari to a 1-1 draw.

In the third-tier league, Sudtirol posted a 2-1 win over Pro Patra. Ghanaian midfielder Alimeyaw Salifu came off the Pro Patra bench to play the last 9 minutes of normal time.

Santarcangelo posted a 1-0 win over Rimini. Ghanaian midfielder Dennis Kumih sat on the Rimini bench while former AS Roma midfielder Francis Obeng came off the bench to play for Santarcangelo.

Caleb Ekuban was in full time action for Renate in their 2-0 home loss against Pro Piacenza.

Former Fiorentina defender Nii Nortey Ashong played the entire match for Lucchese in their 3-1 win against Teramo.

Carrarese suffered a 4-1 humiliation at Maceratese on Sunday. Torino loanee Emmanuel Gyasi played 76 minutes for Carrarese but defender Moro Al-Hassan warmed their bench.

Daniel Kofi Agyei scored the match winner for Casertana when they won 2-1 against Monopoli.

In the Primavera, defender Bright Gyamfi assisted a goal for Inter Milan when they drew 1-1 with Udinese. Forward Samuel Appiah Darko warmed the Inter bench.

NETHERLANDS

Suspended Derrick Luckassen watched from the stands at the AFAS Stadion as his AZ Alkmaar side succumbed to a 1-0 home loss against ADO Den Haag.

Manchester City loanee Thomas Agyepong was in action for FC Twente when they squeezed out a point from Excelsior Rotterdam after holding them to a 1-1 draw. But, there was no Shadrach Eghan in the Twente squad for the game.

Rodney Antwi could not the FC Utrecht first team grades for their 1-0 away win at De Graafschap on Saturday.

NEC Nijmegen were held to a 2-2 draw by visiting PEC Zwolle. Ghanaian defender Marcel Appiah came off the NEC bench in the 76th minute to play in the game.

Roda JC and FC Groningen shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw. Ghanaian pair of Richmond Boakye-Yiadom and Edwin Gyasi both started the game for Roda but Belgian-born Ghanaian defender Marvin Ofori-Appiah was not in the Roda team. Dutch-born defender Johan Kappelhof was booked in the 69th minute.

In the second-tier league, Aruba international of Ghanaian descent Erixon Danso scored one of the consolation goals for Emmen when they lost 3-2 against Maastricht. AZ Alkmaar loanee Raymond Gyasi was not in the Emmen side for the game.

Forward Johnathan Agyemang Opoku failed to find the net for VVV Venlo when they posted a comprehensive 5-0 win over Fortuna Sittard.

In other games Jong Ajax mauled Waalwijk after hammering them 5-3. Ghanaian youth duo of Leeroy Owusu and Elton Acolatse played for Ajax.

SPAIN

Ghana midfielder Bernard Mensah came off the Getafe bench in the 80th minute to play in their 4-1 loss at Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Real Madrid 'BBC' was on target.

Wakaso Mubarak was left out of the Las Palmas squad that suffered a 3-1 loss at Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

In the Segunda Division, Fatau Mohammed was not in the Almeria squad when they drew 2-2 at Gimnastic.

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Michael Anaba warmed the Elche bench in their 0-0 draw with Tenerife on Saturday.

Still in the Segunda Division, Ghana goalkeeper Razak Braimah manned the post for Cordoba in their 2-1 win over Sporting Girona.

Defender Kasim Nuhu was on the Real Mallorca bench when they booked a 2-0 win over Albacete.

In the third-tier league, Ghanaian center-forward Galder Dwomoh was in the 76th minute and played the entire game for Portugalete when they lost 1-0 against Real Madrid.

Clifford Aboagye and Richard Boateng were in action for Granada B in their 2-2 draw with Villanovense.

BELGIUM

Unsung Ghanaian defender  Nana Akwasi Asare played the entire regulation minutes of the game for KAA Gent when they shared the spoils with Zulte-Waregem in a 2-2 draw.

OH Leuven coasted to a 5-1 victory over Westerlo. Ghanaian midfielder Samuel Asamoah climbed off the bench to assist the 5th goal in the 81st minute for Leuven. Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Mitch Apau was in full time action for Westerlo.

Ghana youth striker Benjamin Tetteh came off the Standard Liege bench in the 76th minute to play in their 0-0 draw at Waasland-Beveren. Liege finished the game with ten men.

KRC Genk and Anderlecht battled to a 0-0 draw on Sunday. Both Bennard Kumordzi and Frank Acheampong missed the game with injuries.

In the Second Division, none of the seven Ghanaian players made the Lierse SK squad when they won 3-1 against Coxyde.

Elsewhere in the same division, former Ghana youth striker Kwame Nsor was in action for FC Seraing when they lost 2-1 against KSV Roeselare. Seraing finished the game with ten men.

DENMARK

There was no Francis Dickoh in the Midtjylland side that lost 2-1 at Aarhus on Friday.

Danish-born Ghanaian attacker Kevin Mensah was not in the Esbjerg team that suffered a 1-0 home loss against Sonderjyske.

League title contenders FC Copenhagen cruised to a 4-1 win over visiting BK Odense. Ghana defender Daniel Amartey played for Copenhagen.

GERMANY

Mainz 05 halted the Hamburg in their tracks after beating them 3-1 at their favourite Volksparkstadion. German-born Ghanaian youth sensational Gideon Jung played 58 minutes for Hamburg.

Former Real Madrid defender Daniel Opare failed to make the Augsburg squad for their 1-0 away win over FC Koln on Saturday. The defender who joined from FC Porto has recovered from injury though.

In the Bundesliga II, Ghanaian midfielder Manfred Osei-Kwadwo came off the bench to play for Kaiserslautern in their 2-1 win over St Pauli. Defender Davidson Drobo-Ampem could not make the Pauli squad for the game.

German-born Ghanaian midfielder Kwame Kusi played at left-back and lasted the entire minutes of the game for Fortuna Koln when they won 3-1 against VfL Osnabruck.

In the further lower-tier league, Kumasi-born Canada international Randy Edwini-Bonsu was axed from Aalen regular squad when they drew 1-1 at Bremen II.

German-born Ghanaian midfielder Reagy Ofosu, spotting the number 11 jersey, played the entire match for Chemnitzer when they picked a 1-0 win over Stuttgarter Kickers. German-born forward Erich Berko also played the full 90 minutes for Kickers.

Promotion hopefuls Holstein Kiel managed a 3-1 away win over Erfurt on Saturday. Ghanaian midfielder Evans Nyarko returned from injury but warmed the Kiel bench for the entire period of the game.

There was no Prince Owusu in the Stuttgart II side that lost 2-1 against Wehen at their own backyard.

PORTUGAL

Ghanaian defender Richard Ofori was in full-time action for Academica Coimbra when they suffered a 3-0 loss at Benfica in the top-tier division.

Defender Samuel Inkoom and Emmanuel Hackman both played for Boavista in their 3-2 away reverse at Arouca.

Emmanuel Boateng warmed the Moreirense bench in their 0-0 draw with Sporting Braga.

Ghana U20 forward Osei Barnes warmed the Pacos Ferreira bench when they  lost 2-1 at FC Porto on Saturday.

In second-tier league, injured Ishmael Yartey watched from the stands as his Gil Vicente side held Chaves to a 1-1 draw.

Former Inter Milan youth team forward Said Ahmed Said scored the match winner for Olhanense in their 2-1 win at SC Farense.

Braga B defeated Guimaraes B 2-1. Ghanaian starlet Emmanuel Oti warmed the Braga B bench.

FC Porto loanee Lumor Agbenyenu played for Portimonense in their 2-1 loss against Atletico CP.

RUSSIA

At the Kuban Stadium, Krasnodar pipped Kuban 3-2 at their own backyard. Ghanaian midfielder Rabiu Mohammed was not in the Kuban squad for the game.

SAUDI ARABIA

Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari was booked in the 86th minute and played the entire game for Al-Ittihad Jeddah in their 2-1 win against Al-Shabab.

CYPRUS

Anorthosis Famagusta claimed a 2-0 win over Paralimni on Saturday. Former Black Stars striker Chris Dickson played the full 90 minutes for Paralimni while former Manchester City defender Razak Nuhu reclaimed his place in Anorthosis side to play full throttle.

Both Carlos Ohene and John Arwuah played for AEL Limassol when they defeated Omonia Nicosia 2-1 on Sunday.

POLAND

Ghanaian midfielder Aziz Tetteh was in action for Lech Poznan when they won 2-0 against Korona Kielce.

Defender Kwame Francis warmed the Podbeskidzie bench in their 1-1 draw with Ruch on Saturday.

SWITZERLAND

Attacker Ebenezer Assifuah played 63 minutes for ten-man FC Sion who slipped to a 1-0 loss at FC Zurich.

Out-of-favour striker Samuel Afum failed to make the Young Boys squad for their 3-1 loss at Luzern.

AUSTRIA

Ghana youth midfielder David Atanga sat on the Red Bull Salzburg bench for their 0-0 draw at Mattersburg. There was no Reinhold Yabo in the Salzburg squad.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Sparta Prague managed a 1-0 win over Banik Ostrava. Striker Francis Narh missed the game with suspension while Derrick Mensah is injured.

There was neither Isaac Sackey nor Kevin Luckassen in the Slovan Liberec side that managed a 2-1 win over Slavia Prague.

GREECE

Midfielder Michael Essien was booked in the 22nd minute and played the entire game for Panathinaikos when they 1-0 against Veria.

In the second-tier league, former Bechem United striker Eric Warden scored the only goal of the game for Olympiakos Volos in their 1-0 triumph over Kissamikos.

ROMANIA

Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muniru came off the Steaue Bucuresti team to play in their 2-0 win over CS U. Craiova.

SERBIA

Midfielder Samuel Owusu was not in the Surdulica team when they beat OFK Beograd 2-1. But attacker Suraka Zakaria played the entire game.

Elsewhere FK Cukaricki were condemned to a 7-2 loss by Red Star Belgrade. Ghanaian defender Lee Addy came off the FK Cukaricki bench to play in the game but there was no Obeng Regan in their squad.

TURKEY

Ghanaian forward Kwame Karikari came off the Balikesirspor bench to play in their 0-0 draw with Karsiyaka.

In other games defender Joseph Attamah played in central defence for Adana Demirspor in their 3-1 away win over Yeni Malatyaspor. There was no Moro Ibrahim the Adana squad for the game.
