President Mills asks for collaboration to build colts football

President John Evans Atta Mills has tasked the Ministry of Youth and Sports to collaborate with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and private stakeholders to rebuild colts football as a base for the growth of Ghana's football.

President Mills said this when he delivered his third State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday.

He said "We must strive to maintain the high standards Ghana has set in world football."

Colts football, the base of Ghana football has in recent times seen a gradual decline.

Colts league, which was popular across the country in the past, has either died out or are not performing, whilst the rest barely survive.

Many have blamed the absence of corporate support for colts clubs and league, with GFA also seen to be paying little attention to the game at the grassroots, which is the breeding grounds for many clubs in soccer loving countries.

President Mills also noted that other sporting disciplines will also be used as rallying point to harness the potential of the youth.

President Mills said "my Christmas card for last year featured a picture of the gallant Black Stars who did the nation proud in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa."

"I meant it was a signal that our country's heroes will always be remembered and that Ghana is worth dying for, and once again, on behalf of all the people of Ghana I congratulate them for doing the nation proud."

The President said, "We are going make an effort to reorient the psyche of our youth towards what we consider to be Ghanaian values - especially on the issue of moral consciousness."
