Q&A: Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah talks football, life and Black Stars
Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah

Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah talks extensively about his football career, personal life and his dream to play for the Black Stars at the 2014 World Cup.

The 26-year-old was featured in the Spanish online football newspaper AS.com following his consistent displays in the Segunda B with Cordoba.

The ex Nania FC shot-stopper has revived Cordoba’s relegation fight since arriving from CD Guadalajara in January.

The Ghana international’s consistent displays has seen the side move out of the relegation zone with a dozen of games left to the end of the season.

Brimah shares his life experiences as an emerging goalkeeper, his football adventure and future international aspirations with the Black Stars.

Even though you are yet to play in the elite division, you are already a Ghana international. How did that come about?

Yes, I have already debuted for Ghana and the coach [Kwesi Appiah] liked me a lot. On March 5, we have a friendly against Montenegro and hope to called again and follow the team to go to the World Cup. The coach has confidence in me when I virtually unknown, so now that I am amerging, I imagine he will continue to rely on me.

How did you come to Spain?

I was playing in Germany, where I arrived after the Wolfsburg discovered me in an U17 youth tournament in Switzerland. But the cold in Germany was not normal and I only endured one year. I came to Andalusia to try my luck, because the climate is more like that of my country. Signed for Poli Ejido and there I met a countryman of mine. After I've played for many teams this country until I signed for Córdoba B.

What have you been welcomed in Córdoba?

I have been received very well. Atmosphere is very good. I'm playing with the reserves and training with the first team and the truth is that colleagues have welcomed me well. I am very happy. Because I signed for this season hope to stay here for a while. A lot of players want to play in Spain because for me it is the best league. What teams do you admire and would want to play for in future?

My dream was and still is to compete with the best. My favorite teams are Barcelona and Manchester United. These are the teams that I look a lot and hopefully one day I can get to play at that level.

Which are your favorite players?

My favorites goalkeepers are Casillas and Buffon. Casillas I saw for the first time at the World U-20 in Nigeria. I am not surprised at all by his progress as he is now the best in the world.

At the World Cup, Ghana has been drawned in a so-called 'group of death' with the Portugal Cristiano, Özil's Germany, Müller, Lahm ... and the United States. Is it scary the thought of facing the Golden Ball winner?

Cristiano is not scary, but we respect him because you know you're facing the best player in the world. But I look forward to that possibility, looking forward to play against him. Germany worries us more than Portugal.

Which are the weapons of Ghana?

We are a young, but with a good mix of experienced team. We are a quality compact block. People have been extremely pleased with the outcome of the draw and we look forward to it and the World Cup.

Do they look capable of a surprise and pass the first stage?

We believe we can cause an upset. We are very confident in our chances. We see Germany as the strongest opponent of the group, but we believe we can pass by eliminating Portugal and the United States. We know that if we take care of Cristiano well, we can beat Portugal. That will be the key game.
