Real Madrid defender Varane: Zidane and I had problems

Published on: 28 March 2017

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane admits he hasn't always been on good terms with coach Zinedine Zidane.

When the coach was installed in early 2016, it began a period of unrest for the French international that has since settled down with ample first-team opportunities under his countryman.

"[Zidane] arrived mid-season and had to make some decisions very quickly, and it was not easy for me," remarked Varane to L'Equipe. "It needed explaining to me.

"We had disagreements but we were able to speak about them, and now we have a very good relationship.

"[Zidane said:] 'I'll be honest, it's not worth the trouble with me'. He needed me to understand what I had to do to play more, he was very clear, and we started again from a good base so I could earn the trust that was required for me to play."
