Rodrigo: Great potential for futsal in Thailand

Bangkok: Thailand lost 5-7 against Islamic Republic of Iran on Wednesday in the AFC U-20 Futsal Championship semi-finals and will meet Uzbekistan for the third and fourth place match, but it might be head coach Miguel Rodrigo’s last game with the host nation tonight.

“First of all, I congratulate Iran for their victory, but I truly believed we deserved to win,” said Rodrigo, reflecting on the match. “In my opinion, we played much better and had more chances on goal, but nonetheless, the match today was an amazing display of futsal.

“But I feel like I am going to play my last match with Thailand.”

Despite the achievements of the Thai senior national team, the Spaniard believes there is still room to grow.

“There is great potential for futsal in Thailand. Right now, futsal here is like a baby, and it’s growing.”

Thailand suffered their first defeat to Iraq, and the Spaniard emphasised that a good defence is a key quality of any great team, and his team has learned a lot since.

“Our defences in the Group Stages were not perfect, but after playing two tiring matches, one against Afghanistan and the other with Iraq, we knew we had to improve.

“Which is why I said we deserved to win, we commanded throughout the game and played really well.

“I believe we can keep it up against Uzbekistan. We want to finish with a smile on our face and achieving third place will be a good reward for the team.”
