SA coach brands Ghanaian referee as 'disgrace'

Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey has been branded as a 'disgrace' by coach of South African side SuperSport United after his unimpressive showing in their Champions League game on Saturday.

Supersport coach Gavin Hunt is furious over how the Ghanaian handled their game against Heartland with many wrong calls going in favour of the Nigerians.

"The referee was a disgrace. I don't know how many free-kicks and yellow card were showed during the match," Hunt said.

"We also had an obvious penalty but he turned a blind eye when a Nigeriandefender handled the ball inside the 18 area box.

"However despite the results we are still confident of beating the Nigerian team and go to the next stage of the tournament."

The comments have raised eye brows over the performance of the Ghanaian referee and a review of the game could affect his chances of progressing into the top ranks of his trade.

Heartland drew 1-1 against United in the CAF match at Rand Stadium on Saturday.

The return leg will be played in Nigeria in two weeks' time.
