South African side Maritzburg United are expected to complete the signing of Ghana striker Mike Mohammed from Swaziland side Mbabane Swallows today (Tuesday).

Mohammed played for the KwaZulu-Natal side in the Uthukela Mayoral Cup over the weekend and got a thumbs-up from coach Steve Komphela, who said they would make a move for the forward this week.

"He played well and is a very good player. You could see that he just needed to score but we are in the process of signing him," Komphela said.

Mohammed travelled to Port Elizabeth to camp with Kaizer Chiefs in this pre-season, but was released to join the Team of Choice after not fitting the bill for Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter.

The Sowetan newspaper reported that Maritzburg and Swallows have verbally agreed a transfer for the player, with all that is needed to seal the deal being the paperwork to be signed.

The forward would be the fourth major signing for Komphela in a transfer window.

Others to arrive are veteran former Ghana international defender John Paintsil from National First Division side Santos, young centre-back Kwanda Mngonyama on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as midfielder Sibusiso Kumalo, who also arrives on a temporary deal from the Tshwane giants.

Maritzburg lost 1-0 to Free State Stars in the semifinals of the Uthukela Mayoral Cup and Komphela admits there is more work to do.

The player will no doubt hope to do better than his fellow countryman at Maritzburg, Yakubu Mohammed.

The Ghanaian hitman managed just one goal in his one and only season with the side.
