South African side Maritzburg United expect their Ghanaian defender Awal Moahmmed to return to action for the club on Friday to boost their league campaign.

The centre-back was given permission to travel to Ghana to spend time with the family after playing at the just ended 2013 African Cup of Nations.

Maritzburg now expect to be boosted by the return of their star defender when they face Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night.

The Team of Choice resumed their Premiership campaign with a 0-0 stalemate in the KwaZulu-Natal derby against AmaZulu on Tuesday night.

Coach Ernst Middendorp is now looking forward to having his top defender available for selection.

United will also be strengthened at the back by the return of fullback Ruben Cloete, who missed the game against AmaZulu due to suspension, as well as Ghanaian international Mohamed Awal.

“We have Ruben Cloete back on Friday and Mohamed Awal is still somewhere in Ghana; not really celebrating, but I can understand that he needed some days off,” Middendorp said.

“We are expecting him Awal back on Thursday ahead of Friday’s game in Port Elizabeth.”
