Sampdoria 0-1 AC Milan: Rossoneri squeeze past Blucerchiati

Published on: 17 April 2016

An intriguing contest at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris saw AC Milan emerge with 1-0 victory over Sampdoria.

In a match that after 70 minutes had failed to deliver on its promise, Carlos Bacca stepped up to open and close the scoring, and provide the Rossoneri with the away victory.

One of new Milan coach Cristian Brocchi’s first big decisions was to reinsert Mario Balotelli into the starting lineup and the troubled forward saw an early free kick finish over the crossbar.

Carlos Bacca and Ricardo Alvarez exchanged near post misses within 60 seconds as both teams were out searching for the early advantage.

Dodo thought he had given the home side the lead after 25 minutes but for a very late offside decision that seemed to be made correctly.

Sampdoria goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano was called to make an impressive save on Bacca’s point blank effort inside the six-yard box.

Roberto Soriano and Fernando then had two efforts parried by Gianluigi Donnarumma to conclude an enticing first half.

Minutes after the interval, Balotelli became visibly irritated with himself after missing his fourth free kick.

In the 64th minute, Quagliarella did well to get a narrow-angled shot on goal, but Donnarumma was alive to the effort.

Milan eventually took the lead in the 71st minute when Bonaventura found himself in some space down the right and played square to Bacca, the Colombian taking one touch before driving his effort through the legs of the defender and past Viviano into the far corner of the net.

Modibo Diakite should have brought the home side level but completely missed his effort alone at the far post, proving costly as Il Doria could not generate another genuine goalscoring opportunity.

Despite the loss, Sampdoria remain in 15th place, now just six points clear of the relegation zone.

The Milan victory on the other hand, keeps the Rossoneri’s slender Europa League hopes alive, seven points back of Fiorentina in 5th place. Milan can also qualify however, with a victory against Juventus in the Coppa Italia final. Coach Brocchi will be happy to see his senior debut end on a positive note.
