Sampdoria boss confident of strong finish despite Roma defeat

Sampdoria coach Vincenzo Montella believes his side on track to finish the season on a high following defeat to Roma.

Goals from Alessandro Florenzi and former Genoa man Diego Perotti condemned the visitors to defeat despite pulling one back.

“We tried to contain Roma in the first half, and in fairness we did manage to limit their attacks,” Montella told Premium Sport.

“For the first time this year the team looked more attentive, but we did show naivety in the manner that we conceded today.

The Blucerchiati were handed a route back into the match when Fernando saw his effort deflected in off Miralem Pjanic.

“After going down 2-0 we had a great second half, even if we could have drawn level but we are definitely on track now.

“The calendar doesn’t do favour us, but this team has the quality to finish the season on a high,” Montella concluded.

Sampdoria are now five points ahead of Carpi and the dreaded relegation zone, but haven’t won since January.
