Sampdoria striker keen to claim derby win for fans

Ahead of Sunday’s Derby della Lanterna between Sampdoria and Genoa, Blucerchiati forward Fabio Quagliarella admitted the players owe a lot to the fans.

Samp will overtake their Rossoblu rivals should they claim victory at the Stagio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday afternoon, despite sitting three places behind them in the Serie A table.

“For a football fan, the derby is one of the most beautiful sights there is,” Quagliarella told Secolo XIX. “The choreography, environment and passion is second to none.

“For both sets of fans these are the two games of the year. In the city we cannot speak about one another. We owe a lot to the fans. Among everything that happens in the derby, we cannot forget about the supporters.”

Despite acknowledging that Genoa were favourites for the game, due to their position in the table, Quagliarella looked to take inspiration from a recent derby upset that he was part of.

“They have to be considered favourites when you see the table,” the 33-year-old added. “Anything can happen in a derby; at Torino we managed to beat a Juventus side who won the Scudetto and reached a Champions League final, as well as winning the Coppa Italia.”
