Saudi Arabia’s Al Bukhari beaming with pride

Manama: Prior to their AFC U-19 Championship Bahrain 2016 quarter-final encounter, Iraq and Saudi Arabia’s campaigns reflected two very contrasting tales. The young Lions of Mesopotamia stormed through the group stage, emerging as the first of eight teams to qualify for the quarter-finals. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, were on the brink of exiting before an impressive victory over heavyweights Korea Republic in their final Group A match salvaged their campaign.

In an action-filled spectacle, Iraq and Saudi Arabia demonstrated determination and ambition in their efforts to stand among the world’s best in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea Republic next May.

Deadlocked at 2-2 after extra-time, Al Bukhari showed immense resolve to save, not once, but twice as Saudi Arabia defeated their opponents 6-5 in a sudden death penalty shootout. “I am delighted to get those saves. This is like a dream come true for me. You could see how difficult it was today. Every time we play Iraq, it is tough. Today, there was even more at stake,” Al Bukhari told the-AFC.com.

“I want to thank God for helping us to keep focused and for giving me confidence to save the penalties.”

While Iraq looked the brighter of the two sides in the earlier stages, it was Saudi Arabia who forged ahead with a two-goal cushion. Two goals in three minutes saw Iraq force the tie into extra time.

“To be honest with you, I was quite worried after losing the lead. All of us were nervous after they came back from two goals. After the final whistle, as we huddled, our coach reminded us to stay calm and be professional,” added the towering teenager.

After their opening day defeat to Bahrain, few would have favoured Saudi Arabia to advance past the group stage. Overcoming the odds, the young Green Falcons are now the first team to qualify for Korea Republic 2017 and the semi-finals of the AFC U-19 Championship. Al Bukhari, however, wants his teammates to go the distance.

“We cannot stop here. We have come this far. Today, we are happy, but tomorrow, it is back to work for us. We must continue to maintain our form to win this title.”
