Schlupp, Accam named in Ghana squad for AFCON qualifiers, Essien among World Cup quintet axed

Published on: 20 August 2014
Ghana have maintained most of their players who played at the World Cup

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has named seven players who missed the recent World Cup and dropped four key players who were in the tournament in Brazil from his squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Goalkeeper Razak Brimah, Baba Abdul Rahman, Jeffrey Schlupp, Awal Mohammed, Yussif Chibsah, Solomon Asante and David Accam are the seven returnees invited for the matches against Uganda and Togo.

Sulley Muntari, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Michael Essien and Adam Kwarasey were dropped from the squad following the explosive problems at the World Cup which resulted in the sacking of two players at the competition in Brazil.

Long-serving Samuel Inkoom, who was not among the players who caused problems at the World Cup, was also excluded from the 24-man squad.

But the Black Stars squad seems not to have changed much as most of the key players inlcuding captain Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah, Andre Ayew and Christian Atsu were part of Kwesi Appiah's 23-man squad.

Goalkeeper Brimah takes the place of Kwarasey who has stated that he does not want to play for the Black Stars unless the goalkeepers' coach Nassam Yakubu is sacked.

The Spain-based shot-stopper and Chibsah return to the squad after playing in the friendly against Japan earlier this year and have not been called back since then.

As predicted by Ghana's leading football news website,, in-form Germany-based defender Abdul-Rahman returns to the team profiting from the axing of Muntari as Kwadwo Asamoah would be moved to occupy the midfield position the AC Milan player played during the World Cup.

Schlupp and Accam, who were part of the provisional Black Stars squad for the World Cup but missed the boat have also been given the opportunity to impress coach Kwesi Appiah.

Towering South Africa-based Mohammed Awal returns to the squad after playing in some of the World Cup qualifiers but was not named in the provisional squad for the tournament in Brazil.

Ghana will play Uganda on September 5 in Kumasi and take on the Hawks the following weekend in Lome.

The 30th edition of AFCON will be played from 17 January through to 8 February 2015 in Morocco.

Winners and runner-up of each group plus the third-best team will join hosts Morocco for the final tournament.

Ghana squad:

Goalkeepers: Fatau Dauda (Chippa United, South Africa), Adams Stephen (Aduana Stars) and Razak Braimah (Mirandes FC, Spain)

Defenders: Daniel Opare (FC Porto, Portugal), Harrison Afful (Esperance FC, Tunisia), Awal Mohammed (Maritzburg, South Africa), Baba Rahman (FC Augsburg, Germany), Jeffery Schlupp (Leicester City, England), John Boye (Erciyesspor FC, Turkey) and Jonathan Mensah (Evian FC, France)

Midfielders: Emmanuel Agyeman Badu (Udinese, Italy), Rabiu Mohammed (Krasnodar, Russia), Yusif Chibsah (Sassuolo, Italy), Kwadwo Asamoah (Juventus, Italy), Mubarak Wakaso (Rubin Karzan, Russia), Atsu Christian (Everton, England), Asante Solomon (T.P. Mazembe FC, Congo DR.), Gyimah Edwin (Black Aces, South Africa), Afriyie Acquah (Parma FC, Italy) and Andre Ayew (Olympique Marseille, France)

Strikers: Asamoah Gyan (Al Ain, UAE), Jordan Ayew (Lorient, France), Abdul Majeed Waris (Spartak Moscow, Russia), David Accam (Helsenborg, Sweden).

What do you think of the squad? Do you think the right players have been called? Do you think some players dropped should have been included? Do you think Ghana can defeat Togo and Uganda with this squad? Make your views known in the box below:

Frank: You said it best. Everyone is making noise but it is all about discipline and wanting to play for your nation. The reality is that Gyan, Dede and Kasa are the players who will always give that 100%. I can include Atsu and Rabiu. As long as those guys are healthy and on the field, we can beat African competition. It will not be easy but it can be done. Everyone is bitter and angry because they realize that we still are not ready to win a World Cup. I think the humility pill should be swallowed and we just have to go with the guys we have and hope they give 100%. That is it. Making rash moves at this time is not going to help matters. Wait until after the AFCON 2015 and then make all the rash moves. Right now, we have a team that was able to draw 2-2 with Germany. Let us focus on getting that type of performance out of our team every game.

The following players have no business in the team Braimah, Awal, Boye, Gyimah, Asante & Chibsah. These are mediocre players and have nothing better to offer to the team they should have been replaced with the likes of Kumordzi, Sumaila, Sulley Nuru/Ainooson, Duncan, Granada's Fatau & even Adomah whom I think he's a better option that midget Asante. I mean what is Braimah a 3rd tier GK doing in the team? Has our national team become so cheap that err Tom, dick & harry that plays in any shit league can gain a call-up? Really pathetic! I would have even preferred the U20 GK Antwi to this Braimah guy. As for Dauda he is only in the team cuz of Kwarasey's absence he better start getting games @ club level & improve his form if not we gonna make sure he doesnt receive a call-up anymore. What's so special about these SA based players lol! As far as am concerned our domestic league is even stronger and much more competitive than this mediocre SA league we have players that are 1000x better than these SA based players, this shit can only happen in GH buh what do you expect if you have a clueless manager like AA and a bunch of pot belly FA officials @ the helm of affairs.

Is that how we will now go with the national team?that when there is something and say it as ti's,you should not be invited again?that means even when things are not going as the way it should, nobody has to say every body has to remain Silent else you will not be invited again. If Akwasi Appiah himself is not paid for just one month how will he fell?and when players appearance fee is not giving to them and they protest it then you drop them. When you went and fail at south Africa cup of nation and proceeded to fail at Brazil why didn't GFA SACK YOU?The GFA feels you are Ghanian, you are a black man and for that matter proceed with your job and yet you are Hippocrates to the extend that you drop certain players because they protested for their right.GOD IS WATCHING YOU AA.

Theres no day I will like kwesi appiah even if he won a cup for Ghana. His not a kind of coach i preffered. He is a tribalitically coach. In my point of views,he like players who shares their wealth with him. I can stand in front of appiah myself and tell him to go and learnd a game of football for good 50 years before he can coach better. His being telling other Black stars players to disolve amount themselves like he himself does when he was playing for Ghana. Now that kwesi appiah is sacking the players due to disrespect he forgot so sooner when he was fighting with other members because they handed the capitain band to Abedi Pele in Senegale 1992. Did he forgot that? what a shame it was. He wasnt good enough and was at that time devided the team Northerners and Southerners that was what he did what a shame? when a child slapp his own father that child generations shall also give him the same slapp or even more. Coach appiah urinated in his parnties shouting everywhere just today his now asking others to keep cool with him can it work out for him? Noooo noooo.

You called these own goal scorers a good squad? how many matches did they play out to please you? wait to see how the coach will make his selections when the match due then we will get to know whether kwesi appiah is mumu or not. You can have experience players but if you lack qualities to used them there you will definitely fails. The teams Black stars is gonna face is not that easy to beat up now every national team knows a game of soccer. Only a good coach shall come out with a good results.Next time kwesi appiah will sack Kwadow Asamoah Asamoah Gyan and the Ayew brothers. what goes around shall sourely come back around. Next time coach Appiah and Nyantekyi will receieve a dirty slapp in the face bumbum and is not gonna be the senior players but the younger ones hahahhahahahha keep on scoring own goals for appiah and kisses Ghana monies.

Because one has coach Kotoko, Hearts or has even played the National team does not means he is capable of coaching the national team. Even being the Asis. Dose not mean that. Everythingis clear here. There is something wrong somewhere. One of the Qualities of A real coach knowing the mentalitiesof the players(because tje national team is made of players from the whole world). The national team will be trashed bigtime if nothing is done

Rasheed: I may agree with you on Gyimah but once again we have to understand that sometimes there are logistical reasons that lead to selection. It is not as if he is starting Gyimah. As for Dauda, Kwarasey is definitely better but we have to be realistic...he did not fit the team chemistry. At the goalie position, the chemistry with the back line is important. Maybe if he was teamed up with some foreign born centerbacks it would work perfectly but Boye and Mensah are "typical area guys" who might not quite get some of the "slangs". No need to risk any errors. I like Kwarasey but until the make up of the team changes, he is not a good fit right now. To be honest, I wanted to see Boakye Yiadom and Assifuah along with Acheampong but they would not get any playing time anyway. We already know the starting lineup anyway: GK: Dauda RB: Afful, CB: Boye CB: Mensah, LB: Schulp RW: Atsu CM: Rabiu CM: Kasa LW: Dede FW: Gyan FW: Warris If there is a draw or we are behind in the second half, Warris will come out first and Jordan or Accam will come in. The first midfield subs are Badu, Wakasso and Acquah. The rest of the team is pretty much just for training or if some serious injuries take place.

If you run a business and the staff is mostly made up of guys who grew up in Bukom and went to "Cyto" and then you add a guy who grew up in Cantoments and went to GIS, there will be some issues unless the Cantoments/GIS guy has a certain type of of outgoing and strong personality. So it is not really language alone. It is one's personality. I am confident that Kwarasey is the best goalie but I feel his low key personality works against him in this particular cross cultural situation.
