Wakaso Mubarak is a target for Celtic ahead of Wednesday's clash with NK Maribor in Slovenia

Ghana midfielder Mubarak Wakaso is set to sign for Celtic within the next 48 hours as the Scottish giants are racing against the the clock to seal the loan deal in time to play in Wednesday's Champions League play-off against NK Maribor.

Parkhead chiefs are understood to have agreed a one-year loan move with Rubin Kazan for the winger, with an option to buy at the end of the season for £2.5million.

Ghana's leading football news website, www.ghanasoccernet.com exclusively revealed last week that talks were underway over for Wakaso to move to the Scottish giants. Now Scottish insiders say Celtic worked late into last night piecing together a transfer to capture the exciting winger from Russian side Rubin Kazan.

After lengthy negotiations with his club and his representatives, the Hoops believe they are getting close to securing a loan deal for the pacy 24-year-old.

The Hoops hierarchy hope to push the deal through before tonight’s deadline ahead of the Champions League play-off against Maribor.

Wakaso has fallen out of favour at Rubin and the Russians put a £4m price tag on his head as a move to Genoa was lined up.

But the 24-year-old is now in line for a switch to Glasgow and the prospect of Champions League football, if Ronny Deila’s team can overcome their Slovenian opponents.

If they can get everything agreed, and international clearance, the man who played at this summer's World Cup finals in Brazil could become Celtic's wildcard signing for the play-offs.

Ronny Deila and his squad fly out to Slovenia tomorrow morning - unless CAS decide tonight to support Legia Warsaw's request to have the ties postponed.

But Celtic have been working on a handful of possible deals, and it looks like Wakaso will be the final name added to the squad for the vital play-off ties.

The Ghanaian international moved from Espanyol to Russian club Rubin Kazan for £5.25m last summer.

Wakaso headed to Spain as a teenager to join Elche in 2008 from Ghanaian side AshantiGold then played for Villarreal and Espanyol before moving to Russia last year.

Despite a difficult time in Eastern Europe the winger was selected for the World Cup.

He played against Germany during the group stage after finishing joint top scorer at the 2013 African Nations Cup.

Wakaso will be a valuable addition to Celtic because of his pace, power and powerful shots in both legs.
