Shanghai seal AFC Champions League quarter-final first leg victory over Guangzhou

Shanghai: Two goals in two minutes from Wu Lei helped Shanghai SIPG earn a comprehensive 4-0 win over Guangzhou Evergrande in the first leg of their 2017 AFC Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

In front of a packed Shanghai Stadium, Hulk kept his perfect scoring record in this year’s AFC Champions League alive, converting a penalty won by Wu Lei in the 38th minute to give the home side the advantage, which was doubled on the stroke of half time when captain Wang Shenchao headed home under the legs of Zeng Cheng.

Wu Lei’s quick-fire brace just after the hour mark, both of which showcased the speed and power of the Shanghai counter-attack, put the exclamation mark on one of Shanghai SIPG’s finest-ever performances on the continent.

The damage could have been worse for Guangzhou Evergrande had Hulk and Elkeson not spurned clear-cut chances, but as it is they face a colossal task to overturn the 4-0 deficit when they host the return leg at the Tianhe Stadium in three weeks’ time.
