South African side Maritzburg United are seeking to attain a South African work permit for defender, John Paintsil, after extending his contract at the club, Soccer Laduma has reported.

The 34-year-old recently committed to the Team of Choice after putting in a number of impressive performances last season, however will be unable to play until he has been granted a permit.

According to Siya sources, the former Fulham man is currently in Ghana, with the former Ghanaian international finalising his application.

Having been granted a permit last year, it is thought that Maritzburg are not worried about the application being rejected, and are confident that the defender will be available to Mandla Ncikazi when the 2015/16 season begins in a few weeks time.

Paintsil joined Maritzburg from Santos last season, going on to play 27 of their 30 Absa Premiership games in 2014/15.
