English Premier League side Southampton are eyeing Atletico Madrid's Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey as replacement for departed Victor Wanyama.

The Saints saw midfield powerhouse Wanyama leave for Premier League rivals Tottenham last week which has sparked their interest in the talented Spain-based Ghanaian player.

The Saints are hoping Atletico agree to a third loan deal in the last four seasons for the 23-year-old who came on as a late substitute in their Champions League defeat to rivals Real.

Wanyama finally quit St Mary’s for Spurs last week in an £11million deal.

Partey has impressed in La Liga during loan spells at Real Mallorca and Almeria.

He returned to parent-club Atleti last term, making his senior debut for Diego Simeone's men in November.

The Ghana international has struggled, however, to secure a first-team place at his parent club and is keen on a move, with the likes of Gabi, Augusto Fernandez and Koke standing in his way.

The Saints this week splashed £11million on England Under-21 winger Nathan Redmond from Norwich, as they set about strengthening their squad ahead of a Europa League campaign next term.
