Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga is extremely confident of Ghana’s chances of winning the hosting rights to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

The West African country have revealed their intention to bid for the tournament which became suddenly available after Libya ceded its rights to host the 2017 edition due to raging civil unrest.

Ghana only hosted the tournament in 2008, meaning they will be hosting Africa’s flagship competition within the ninth year of staging its last if it wins the 2017 bid.

Some however have doubts over Ghana’s chances of winning the bid which will definitely be highly competitive with other countries expected to reveal their interest.

But Sports Minister believes Ghana’s unique positioning as a giant of African football will scare away any competition.

“Once other countries interested in hosting the Nations Cup hear that Ghana is bidding, they will think twice before also doing same,” he told Happy FM.

“This is because Ghana is a giant in African football and a favourites also.”

The next edition of the Nations Cup will be hosted early next year by Morocco.

It will be the second country to stage the leading African football even since its hosting was moved to odd years.

South Africa hosted the inaugural edition in the competition’s new format in 2013.
